To be a philosopher is not merely to have subtle thoughts, nor even to found a school, but so to love wisdom as to live according to its dictates, a life of simplicity, independence, magnanimity, and trust. It is to solve some of the problems of life, not only theoretically, but practically.

Henry David Thoreau, from “Economy” in Walden

Conversation Starter: Become a Philosopher

Play this game with your friends and family. Brainstorm life areas such as work, play, home, family, and friendship. Have everyone identify ways they:

  • have already simplified their lives.
  • could simplify some more.
  • experience dependency.
  • experience independence.
  • do not feel generous.
  • can be genuinely more generous.
  • do not trust.
  • do trust.

For each category, have everyone share. When another player has an insight or item that rings true, add it to your list. For each round, identify the item and player who has the most Rings True for Me Too. You can tally these and reveal your Resident Practical Philosopher.
